The Service flag is an official banner authorized by the Department of Defense which is displayed by family members of U.S. military personnel serving during times of war.
The Service Flag was created by Army Captain Robert L. Queissner during World War I, to honor his two sons serving on the front line.
Each blue star on the Service Flag represents one family member, and flags can feature up to five stars. If a service member is killed in action or dies in service, a gold star will be displayed on the Service Flag.
The Service flag may also be displayed by an organization to honor the members of that organization serving during a period of war or hostilities.
Flags may be purchased on the internet at www.serviceflags.com.
